A Christmas Tale It was late Christmas Eve of 1965 and I had promised my family that I would meet them in the city for a drink to start the celebrations of with a swing. I had been out most of the day with friends and everything was running late, I had just jumped off of the local bus and had a fair way to walk to get to the "Sir Garnet of Worlsey" public house. The pub was situated beside of the Norwich Market and had just opened a new Wine Bar in the cellar which was all the rage in those days. I almost fell down the small staircase into the bar and tried to look in change of things as I shook the snow from my coat. A shout went out "where have you been we almost gave you up as lost, it looks like you have fallen over in the snow" I quick answers back that I had helped an old woman whom had slipped over on the road outside. I grabbed a seat near the bar and slipped my drink that had be waiting for me for sometime, and then told my story about seeing this little old lady struggling to get across the road but lost all her shopping as she slipped over on the ice. I knew I was late but I just had to stop and help her to her feet, in the process a passing car splashed slush all down my new trousers. She gave me a big smile and said your Christmas will be the best you've ever had young man and then disappeared into the crowd, well she was right I must have won every raffle I bought a ticket for, and had the best time I had ever had for years !! Just luck you might say !! |
