How did the island get its name, well out of all the tales that have come forward the one that most people agree with is way back in our local history, wait for it, the one about a local bus conductor that regularly stopped at a very large housing estate, which always had a vast amount of young very highly strung people alighting at the same bus stop every week .  As they charged down from the top floor of his Double Decker  and swung around the pole at the bottom and out of the door to the pavement, his remark was "they are just like a lots of monkeys" from then on every time he reached the same bus stop for that housing estate he would shout  "anyone for Monkey Island" and it stuck.

The truth is out there,  Monkey Island or The Isle of Mon'key
